Day 7 - Taormina, Mount Etna, Taormina After breakfast, we will drive south and climb Mount Etna. Then, drive back and stop for a light lunch at a winery overlooking the sea. Continue to visit the Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca. The rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner and ovenright at the hotel. Day 8 - Taormina, Catania, Rome This morning, we will drive to the city of Catania and visit the baroque cathedral dedicated to St. Agata. Continue to the airport and board our flight to Rome. Dinner at leisure and overnight at our hotel. Day 9 - St. Paul’s Footsteps in Rome After breakfast, we will drive along the Appian Way to visit the Catacombs of St. Sebastian with remnants of the original basilica dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. We also visit the famous Church of Quo Vadis. Later this morning, we will visit the Imperial Rome Monuments: The Roman Forum, Arch of Titus, the Mamertine Prison where St. Peter and St. Paul were imprisoned and the Colosseum. After a break for lunch on our own, we will visit St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, built over the burial place of the saint. Nearby is the site of the Three Fountains, which tradition says sprung up where each spot the apostle’s head bounced after his beheading. Dinner and overnight are at the hotel. Day 10 - Papal Audience, Christian Rome This morning, we will transfer to the Vatican early to take our seats for the Papal Audience where we are greeted and blessed by the Holy Father. Following lunch (at Satiricus), enjoy a visit to the center of Western civilization and the heart of modern Italy. The “Eternal City” where three millennia of Mediterranean civilization exists. The city is full of larger than life monuments, which we see during the Christian Rome tour. We will visit the Basilica of St. John Lateran,Basilica of the Holy Stairs, Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem and the Basilica of St. Mary Major. Dinner and overnight in Rome. Day 11 - Rome, Vatican Treasures Today, we will visit the Vatican Museum including the Sistine Chapel where we stand in awe as we examine Michelangelo ’s masterpiece. Explore St. Peter’s Basilica before lunch during a guided tour. We willbreak for lunch on our own. In the afternoon, we will enjoy free time at some of the famous Roman sites such as the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Piazza Navone. Tonight, we will have a farewell dinner with wine and traditional Italian music. Overnight in Rome.
